A subscription?

No. Perpetual license. You pay once, you keep the purchased version forever. All 1.x releases are included. v2.0 will have a discounted upgrade price.

Can I switch machines?

Yes — your license is tied to your account: sign out in the app (Account & License) and sign back in on the new machine.

What about updates?

All 1.x included (fixes, fixtures, effects). Major versions (2.0: video mapping, scripting…) will have a discounted upgrade.
