Projects: create, open, save
Your whole show lives in one .lmproj file: patch, scenes, presets, console.
Step by step
- 1Top bar: New (blank page), Open (an .lmproj file), Save (Ctrl+S).
- 2Work fearlessly: on close, a safety net offers Save / Discard.
- 3A dirty dot = badge: while it's there, it's not saved.
Booth tips
- π‘ One .lmproj per gig + date in the name: "2026-10-31-club.lmproj".
- π‘ Copy the file to a USB stick before you leave β that's your backup.
π― Challenge
Create a project, patch one fixture, save with Ctrl+S.

Audio: import and analyze
No analysis = no Show Auto. A well-analyzed track is 80% of the job done.
Step by step
- 1Show Auto mode β Audio Source: drop in an MP3/WAV/FLAC.
- 2Run the analysis: BPM, sections (intro/verse/chorus/drop) and energy are detected.
- 3Check the displayed sections: if the drop is misplaced, force the BPM with tap tempo.
Booth tips
- π‘ Trim silence and spoken intros before analyzing: more accurate tempo.
- π‘ A track with drifting tempo stays a challenge β set the BPM by hand.
π― Challenge
Analyze a track and find its drop on the timeline.
β‘
Show Auto: your track drives the lights
Show Auto generates chasers, colors, strobes and movement from the analysis. You bring the taste.
Step by step
- 1Pick a preset (.lmpreset) or generate from your analyzed track.
- 2Dial in intensity, palette, movement and time division.
- 3Hit play: the light follows the sections (the drop hits harder).
- 4Save as a preset to replay identically live.
Booth tips
- π‘ Strobe too violent? Lower the strobe limit before touching anything else.
- π‘ Live: Grand Master or Blackout, always within reach.
- π‘ Guaranteed harmony: all identical heads execute the same move β the wave sweeps the rig left to right, the chorus rotates as one. No more random mismatched patterns between fixtures.
π― Challenge
Play a whole track without touching a slider after hitting play.
π¨
Color Palettes
Consistent colors across the whole show, instead of a tired rainbow.
Step by step
- 1Color Palettes tab: pick Warm, Cool or Party for the mood.
- 2Apply per section: a cold verse + a warm chorus tells a story.
- 3Edit the palette (eyedropper or name) then β» Replace everywhere: the old color is searched across ALL scenes (RGB or wheel slot) and rewritten β a palette becomes an editable reference.
- 4Build your presets: 3 colors that go together beat 12 random ones.
Booth tips
- π‘ Fewer colors = more pro show. 3 max per track.
- π‘ White breaks everything: save it for peaks (drop, finale).
π― Challenge
Redo one of your tracks with a single 3-color palette.
β¨
Pre-programmed scenes
128 scenes generated from YOUR patch, in 4 banks of 32. Writer's block no longer exists.
Step by step
- 1Pre-programmed scenes tab: pick a bank (Colors, Effects, Matrix, Mix).
- 2Click a tile: it loops. Click again: it stops AND goes dark.
- 3"Regenerate" produces 128 new variations of the same patch.
Booth tips
- π‘ A lit tile stays on even when you switch tabs β click again to kill it.
- π‘ Effects tiles move the heads: check where they point before the audience does.
π― Challenge
Find a moving Effects tile + a slamming Colors tile, chain them.
π
Patch: declare your fixtures
The software can't guess your rig: each fixture is declared once, with its correct address.
Step by step
- 1Setup mode β Fixtures tab: find your model (1500+ references, .qxf import supported).
- 2Set it to its real DMX address (read the fixture's manual).
- 3Address conflict = red: fix it before moving on.
- 4Repeat for each fixture, in DMX chain order.
Booth tips
- π‘ Photo of each fixture's DMX display before teardown. Always.
- π‘ Overlapping addresses = two fixtures freaking out together.
- π‘ Fixture without a dimmer channel (e.g. ACCU UFO)? It's supported: "NO DIM" badge in the patch, intensity fixed at 100%, not a bug.
π― Challenge
Patch your first fixture and light it from the sheet (test).
π₯
Groups
"The 4 front washes" in one click instead of 4: group by role, not at random.
Step by step
- 1Groups tab: create one group per role (front, back, movers, strobes).
- 2Drag the fixtures in.
- 3Drive the group in one go from scenes, chasers and EFX.
Booth tips
- π‘ One fixture can live in several groups (front + all).
- π‘ Name them like you talk at the desk: "front", "back", "strobes".
π― Challenge
Create a "front" group and flash it from a scene.
π¬
Scenes: your frozen looks
One scene = one complete fixture state. It's the brick everything else is built on.
Step by step
- 1Scenes tab: New scene, set dimmer/colors/positions.
- 2Dial in fade in/out and duration (0 = infinite, stays on).
- 3Right-click a scene: Rename, Edit, Duplicate.
- 4Edit lights the beams so you can adjust while watching β the preview holds while you edit.
Booth tips
- π‘ Duplicate instead of starting from scratch: 80% of looks resemble each other.
- π‘ Duration 0 = infinite hold: perfect for working, avoid in chasers unless you want no end.
π― Challenge
Create "Red front": washes in red at 100%, everything else dark.
π
Chasers: chaining scenes
A chaser plays scenes in a loop: runway chases, waves, rhythmic strobes.
Step by step
- 1Chasers tab: New, add scenes as steps.
- 2Set order, speed and direction (forward, backward, ping-pong).
- 3Test: it loops until stopped.
Booth tips
- π‘ A tight 2-step chaser beats a messy 12-step one.
- π‘ Speed at the track's BPM = a chaser that breathes with the music.
π― Challenge
A clean 2-step (red/blue) chaser running at 120 BPM.
π
Cue Lists: GO-button show control
Theatre, one-man shows, ceremonies: each GO press fires the next cue.
Step by step
- 1Cue Lists tab: New list, stack scenes and chasers.
- 2Set manual GO or follow (auto-advance after duration).
- 3Live: one button, no improv at 3am.
Booth tips
- π‘ Number and name each cue like your script ("Q12 - finale").
- π‘ Follow for timed transitions, manual GO whenever a human speaks.
π― Challenge
A 3-cue list played on GO without a miss.
π§
RGB Matrix
Turn your PARs into a giant screen: running lines, circles, diamonds.
Step by step
- 1RGB Matrix tab: draw your matrix (rows/columns).
- 2Pick a pattern: line, circle, diamond, square, triangle.
- 3Set the Direction (Forward/Backward/Ping-pong) and the cell offset.
- 4Launch: the pattern runs, in rhythm if audio-reactive.
Booth tips
- π‘ Order the matrix like the stage seen from the audience, or the pattern runs backwards.
- π‘ Slower = more readable. A slow chase reads; a fast chase smears.
- π‘ Cell order = group order (Groups panel). An off cell is truly off (LTP) β and if a group fixture has neither RGB nor a color wheel, a red alert warns you (it would stay dark).
π― Challenge
A circle running on 4 PARs, clockwise.
π
EFX: parametric movement
Circles, figure-8s, squares, waves: clean movement without step-by-step programming.
Step by step
- 1EFX tab: New effect, pick a pattern (circle, 8, square, triangleβ¦).
- 2Set width, height, speed, rotation.
- 3Attach it to a scene: the scene plays the static look + the wave on top.
Booth tips
- π‘ Small amplitude + slow speed = class. Big + fast = funfair.
- π‘ Test on the floor first: too wide a circle ends up in the audience.
π― Challenge
A slow figure-8 on 2 movers, 30 seconds hands-off.
πΊοΈ
2D View: the stage plot
Place your fixtures like in real life: the 3D and movements follow.
Step by step
- 12D View tab: drag each fixture to its spot (truss, floor, sides).
- 2Set orientation: front-facing, back, side.
- 3The 3D view and beams follow this plot β realistic beams (fade, floor stop), projected gobos, real mechanical ranges (pan 540Β°β¦), musician + DJ silhouettes.
Booth tips
- π‘ A wrong plot = beams going nowhere in 3D.
- π‘ Update the plot every time the venue changes.
π― Challenge
Recreate your last real rig in 2D.
π£
Programmer: live before saving
Purple means unsaved live. The programmer tries, the scene keeps.
Step by step
- 1Touch channels: they go live (purple) without touching scenes.
- 2Like it? Store to a scene (new or existing).
- 3Don't like it? Clear: back to the programmed state.
Booth tips
- π‘ Never Store without looking at what's purple: you'd save the dross too.
- π‘ The programmer takes priority over almost everything: if it's full, nothing else gets through.
π― Challenge
Build a look in the programmer, Store it as a new scene, Clear.
π€
DMX Output: plug it in and it runs
Your USB DMX interface, detected at launch: port assigned, output running, zero configuration.
Step by step
- 1Plug in your USB DMX interface (Enttec, DMXKing, FTDI clones) β Light Maestro detects it automatically at launch.
- 2The port is assigned and the output starts with no configuration: the patch goes out to the rig.
- 3ArtNet and sACN remain configurable in Design β Settings.
Booth tips
- π‘ No driver to install: FTDI interfaces and clones are recognized as-is.
- π‘ Test the output with a single fixture before wiring the whole chain.
π― Challenge
Plug in your interface and watch a scene play on the real rig.
ποΈ
Virtual Console: your live tiles
Your buttons and scenes, big and clickable under stress: your personal console.
Step by step
- 1Perform mode: add buttons (scenes, chasers, blackout) to the canvas.
- 2Drag to move/resize. Right-click: configure, delete.
- 3Organize into pages (e.g. one per track) and switch via tabs.
- 4Live: one press = toggle, except flash (hold = momentary).
- 5Group Master: add a "Group Master" fader (palette + β), select the group β the fader caps the group's dimmer (100% = neutral) without killing the script's dynamics.
Booth tips
- π‘ Big tiles for panic actions (huge blackout, bottom right).
- π‘ One page per track + one "backup" page: blackout, full, strobe.
π― Challenge
One 4-tile page: 2 scenes + 1 chaser + 1 giant blackout.
ποΈ
Faders: Grand Master and DMX channel
Two vital faders: the master volume of light, and one direct channel.
Step by step
- 1Add a slider, Grand Master function: 0 = total dark, 255 = everything.
- 2Add a Channel-function slider: pick universe + address + value.
- 3Add a "Group Master" slider: one submaster fader per group, a non-destructive ceiling (the content stays dynamic under the cap).
- 4Live, the Grand Master dims everything without touching scenes.
Booth tips
- π‘ Grand Master at 80% during soundcheck: headroom to build the show.
- π‘ A channel slider on the backup dimmer saves you when a scene goes sideways.
π― Challenge
Bring a running show down mid-song using only the Grand Master.
πΉ
MIDI: Learn + following LEDs
Map your controller once: pads, faders, and LEDs that mirror the real state.
Step by step
- 1Open MIDI mapping: move a control β click an action β mapped.
- 2Mapped buttons switch on/off like tiles.
- 3LED feedback sends the state back: lit pad = truly active tile.
- 4External BPM: receive the MIDI Clock from Ableton/Triton (24 PPQ) β the clock bar's tempo follows continuously and hands back to the analyzed BPM when the transport stops.
Booth tips
- π‘ Map blackout + 4 scenes first: the rest is bonus.
- π‘ If an LED lies, the mapping is wrong, not the tile.
π― Challenge
Map 2 pads (scene on/off) + 1 fader (Grand Master).
π‘
Remote: OSC, Timecode, Web Remote
Drive from a tablet, a sequencer or the sound desk: the light follows.
Step by step
- 1OSC: receive TouchOSC/Lemur over the network (same actions as MIDI).
- 2Timecode (MTC): trigger cues on a sequencer's clock.
- 3Web Remote: enable the server, scan the URL on your phone β same network required.
Booth tips
- π‘ Test the venue Wi-Fi BEFORE: a saturated network = lost commands.
- π‘ The Remote stays local: never exposed to the internet, by design.
π― Challenge
Fire a scene from your phone via the Remote.
